Closing a Meter Shutoff Valve
Gas service meter valves have “open” and “closed” positions.
With all quarter-turn natural gas meter valves, the valve is open when the valve lug is in line with the gas pipe, and the valve is closed when the lug is crosswise to the pipe.
You must follow three critical and essential rules for gas service meter valves under all circumstances:
- Close a gas meter service valve only if you have been advised by Peoples and trained to do so.
- Always inform utility personnel if a gas meter service valve has been closed.
- Never open any gas valve after it has been closed. Only trained gas utility personnel may open a gas valve to restore service after the valve has been closed.
